I agree with Hazel, if you want to get fit, at least start off just jogging/ running. Even just to build up discipline 'cause saying 'gym's give you that extra incentive' is balls. Gym's are only really needed to get PUMPED/ a waste of money, and if you wanna get pumped and you're not even a sportsman you need culled.

Lets be honest, that's a massive pile of bull****. Gyms are massively useful for anyone wanting to put on muscle not get PUMPED in your words, I spent last year using the gym a lot, watching my diet and training to maintain and build weight for fights (Martial arts) that does not make me in need of culling what so ever. But i couldn't of done the work half as efficiently without a gym, proper weight machines and cardio equipment so I knew how far I was able to push myself and up it accordingly. Gyms arn't "needed" so to speak, but they make things a lot less hassle.

It's 4 miles to Uni and back most days, which I walk. I guess that's something but it's not enough.

Balls to everyone saying don't do it now because it's new year. Do it when you want to do it. If you only go for a few months, then so be it, at least you've gone. If you've got a cheap gym/swimming pool/money then it's yours for the taking.
    My dear, my darling one.

^^ you fell into his 'sportsman' category and would thus be exempted from the culling.

I think i mentioned there that if you're doing it for sport reasons (see: martial arts) that's a good reason.

'put on muscle'/ GET PUMPED. Potato/ potatoe. If people just want to put on a bit of muscle/ tone up, there's perfectly good exercises you can do in your own home with no 'spensive equipment. Pressups, situps, squats, etc.

Dunno why i'm still explaining, 'cause you've just mis-read and the culled part was clearly a joke.

Just got back from the gym with mom, did a cardio class, and I had to slow things down at times, was an hour class and i struggled.

And for anyone that struggles with bad knees and doesnt want to do impact stuff (like me), advice I always gave to patients was, static bike is good, cross trainer, rowing machine, tredmill walking on an incline (great for the glutes) and swimming.  Running on a tredmill is the only one that I find I struggle with.

If you are trying to lose weight, you have to keep things varied, don't just sit on a bike for 30 mins pedalling at the same speed and resistance, do one of the programmes that changes things- same with the cross trainer.

Running is what i have difficulty with, oh and the normal bikes i struggle with too, Doctor thinks it may be cartilage i'm really hoping its not because i dont fancy an op and not sure how long i wont be able to do stuff for afterwards, and I really want to start doing snowboarding with the uni.

If it is the cartilage, you would need an op pretty sure, you can count on being out of full sports for at least 12 weeks, and then you would gradually have to build back up.

Trouble with cartilage is, once you have it removed, it doesnt grow back, and then you are prone to arthritis.

I'm not gonna lie, I like the gym.  I'm not one of those douche's who blogs every single workout and what it burnt/added to them, but there's a really good feeling that comes with doing a solid hour/90 mins then chilling in the sauna, having a cold shower, and carrying on with my day.  The happy chemicals flow freely after that.

Thinking about it, i do quite well. I go for half an hours jog about 3 times a week, swim twice a week and go to the gym once a week (skint)

No where near as good as when i first moved though. I lost 2 stone by doing sit ups every morning and night and jogged for 30 mins everyday, then went to the cheapo gym a few times a week and did kick boxing every wednesday, which i really miss :(

                          Weekend livers with weak livers.

I wouldn't ever join a gym as I know myself and I'd give up after long, but I think it's good for other people. However, I AM going to try and start swimming with the money I'm saving.....I'm finally quitting smoking!!! (Fer real, it's day 3 now. My current emotional range is angry/sad/irritated)

Quitting smoking is not on my agenda.

I realise that's the second post I've made in this thread that's against the general spirit, but honestly, I did go for a lengthy walk yesterday. And I drink a lot of water.

                                      squats are bad for knees.

these are what i give every knee patient, no matter what level of ability they are, back to basics, (i know it says knee replacement, but its the same)

It is the first 3 exercises.

The January surge is very true, and very off putting too. Nothing worse than already feeling a little self concious and then going to a gym full to the brim with people, sometimes waiting for 10s of minutes to use machines. I used to go the gym loads in 2006ish time, and January I just avoided anything other than 7am or 8pm sessions. Otherwise you would just get demotivated. Imagine already trying to get into the swing of something new and then having the added thought of not getting on any of the stuff!

Before I started the gym, I changed my diet, did some small exercises in the garden or round the streets and then went for the gym. Nothing worse than signing for a £200 annual membership to stop after 2 months.
